Samsung introduces a more eco-friendly phone
We’re a bit dubious hearing the words eco-friendly and cellphone uttered in the same sentence, when you consider how many unwanted handsets are clogging up landfills around the world. But Samsung has announced just that: the Blue Earth cellphone with a touch screen.
The touch-screen idea has been around for decades—some of us might remember watches with the concept in the early 1980s—but it does seem to be the “in thing” for mobile devices right now. And Samsung claims to have used environmentally friendly materials, while the phone itself is light on its energy use. That’s at least a good start compared to some of the more wasteful units out there.
Blue Earth is made from post-consumer material (PCM) extracted from water bottles, ‘helping to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions during the manufacturing process,’ says the company. The device is free from PVC, brominated flame retardants and phthalate.
