BBC joins interest in fashion with new drama, Material Girl

There is a growing interest in the fashion trade again—we’ve had to put up with The September Issue; the US is about to air The Beautiful Life with Elle Macpherson and Mischa Barton; and the BBC has now shown a clip of its new drama, Material Girl.
The broadcaster says the series is ‘a romantic comedy about a young fashion designer battling an evil ex-boss, a sexy but devilish business partner and snobby fashionistas to get her break in work and love.’ And it may well be more entertaining than the myriad of same-again reality TV shows on fashion.
Material Girl stars Lenora Crichlow, playing up-and-coming designer Ali Redcliffe. She has to deal with the scheming Davina Bailey, an established designer and Redcliffe’s former mentor, played by Dervla Kirwan. Michael Landes co-stars as Marco, Redcliffe’s business partner.
The series has been inspired by Imogen Edwards-Jones’s Fashion Babylon and is created by Joshua St Johnston. Its writers are Joshua St Johnston, Colin Bytheway, Ben Ockrent, Imogen Edwards-Jones and Jess Williams; Chrissy Skinns (Secret Diary of a Call Girl) produces, and Cilla Ware (Primeval), Sarah O’Gorman (Plus One) and Philip John (Mistresses) direct.
