We havent given up on the web site. But we have sort of become a victim of our own success.
This site hasnt been properly updated since December.
No surprises there. And those of you who have followed us since we began nine
years ago deserve an explanation.
In short, its been tough maintaining both a print magazine
and a web site. I increased our staff numbers a bit, but not hugely. So in 2005,
I began negotiating with Silverstripe,
a company that has developed one of the best content-management systems out
there. For techies out there, Lucire is still put together in a slightly
ancient waywith dynamic HTML, rather than PHP and CMSs.
Silverstripe tells me there are about 20 hours left to go
on the system, and we need a designer or two who can make it all ship-shape.
At the beginning of this year, I was faced with a dilemma: do we proceed on
updating the site the old-fashioned way, or wait till the new system was installed?
We decided to wait, but since its already April, it
is unfair on online-only readers who have not seen anything new from us since
December 2005. Lucire, after all, was set up to be a global titlenot
a title that was available only to those who could access the print magazine.
So, today, well begin some updates, the old-fashioned
way. The new system will début slightly later than I expected, but Ive
adjusted to the new normal of running both a web site and a print
magazine.
In fact, its the biggest period between issues since
we first began in 1997.
Thank you for waiting for usand we wont make
you wait this long again.
