Michelle Mason
AS INNOVATIVE as Ann Demeulmeester,
but as classic as La Croix, Michelle Mason’s collection is the smooth
Grey Goose martini mixed in with Midori, which makes this Spring
2004 collection so trustworthy and palatable.
Thirty-year-old Seoul-born Michelle Mason creates
designs that are reminiscent of a Katherine Hepburn out on safari,
mixed with the loveliness a Brontë novel. Her woman is feminine,
but knows how to play right along side the boys. Mason shows all
complexities of a woman, the sweetness of spring mixed in the uniqueness
of the city, never mistaking design for gaudiness, or modernism
for a flash in the pan.
Mason is a Los Angeles designer. Los Angeles is
normally seen as a bohemian, flesh-obsessed, celebrity-producing
fashion climate, which generally has no room for couture. Paris,
New York or Milano are looked to for innovation and class. Mason’s
designs possess both, and are found right on the west coast.
