For the Week was, after all, a celebration, fêting
the city’s fashion scene. ‘This is it!’ said Marilyn Morley, fashion
editor for Style magazine. ‘This is exactly what you come
to events like this hoping to see.’ She was viewing and cooing about
the Waxman Gala, the first day’s closing event. Held at the cavernous
Angus Yards, now home to film and special effects studios, the interior
provided the perfect surroundings for a Kœchling-orchestrated show.
It was at once a tribute to the retailer, marking its 75th year
of providing tuxedos for Montréalers’ special occasions,
and a very special event in its own right.
Sixteen designers of the city’s top designers,
including Marie Saint Pierre, Nadya Toto, Philippe Dubuc, Yso, and
Rudsak, provided their takes on the hommage au smoking theme
for men and women. ‘Every collection was strong and made a statement,’
said Morley. Born in London, the ex-Torontonian now lives in Montréal.
‘It makes you proud to see how much solid, exciting talent there
is here.’ Among the strongest was Duy, who has forged a near-cult
following in only three seasons of designing womenswear. His take,
a sheer ivory ruffled top and asymmetrical skirt, managed to be
romantic laced with wit and intelligence.
