HAIKEN'S
design team of Julie Chaiken and Jeff Mahshie has again created
a collection, which consists of form and function, for fall 2002.
The collection has a black colour base, as expected
from the fall season in New York, but also sprinkles of tans and
white as well. Tartan creeps in, perhaps poised to make a bigger
splash for springsummer 2003.
What makes this collection strong is as in seasons
past: the structure of the coats and pants, which are stylish yet
extremely functional. It's a nice thing to purchase a pair of slacks,
which can bring you into evening without having to change.
Being a fall collection, Julie and Jeff have equipped
it with a series of overcoats, cut long just above the ankle. Jackets
are included, done in black and deep browns. One piece in particular
was a white suit, which initially struck us as more a spring item,
but with cold weather, Miami might just be calling.
The dresses for evening are long and flowing,
done in black lightweight materials. They do not seem to be "red
carpet contenders" but instead give Chaiken customers comfort, reality
and practicality.
On the whole, this is a collection where necessary
pieces can be picked up to add to a woman's current wardrobe. If
it's true that post-9-11 spending mightn't be as carefreeautomobiles
have been the exception and there aren't "no-interest"
deals on the best fall clothingChaiken should weather the
storm. Richard Spiegel
